NBA Playoffs Round One Predictions for all Eight Pairings

Our predictions for the opening round – no major shocks appear on the cards, but some matchups do look like being close.

Western Conference:

Golden State Warriors (1) vs. Los Angeles Clippers (8)

The two times defending champions may not look as dominant this year, but they have way too much for the Clippers can’t see this going past 5 games and probably will only take 4. Golden State 4-0 on their way to the final

Denver Nuggets (2) vs. San Antonio Spurs (7)

The Nuggets are a whole lot better than we expected and are justifiable no 2 seeds. They lack postseason experience but just about had the Spurs measure in the regular season winning the final meeting rather easily. Should be close but its Denver for us but it will probably take 7 games. Nuggets 4-3

Portland Trail Blazers (3) vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (6)

The Trail Blazers have lost Jusuf Nurkic for the season and there are some question marks over McCollum’s fitness. The Thunder will be without Andre Roberson and Paul George is nursing a shoulder injury so things are pretty much even on the injury front. Should be close but the Thunder had Portland’s Number in the regular season and we expect OKC to edge it in seven. Thunder 4-3

Houston Rockets (4) vs. Utah Jazz (5)

The Rockets and Harden, in particular, are hitting form right when it matters. This should be over in six games tops and probably less. Rockets 4-1; setting up a mouthwatering clash with Golden State in round two.

Eastern Conference:

Milwaukee Bucks (1) vs. Detroit Pistons (8)

The Bucks should take this in a canter. Prediction Milwaukee 4-0 but things will get tougher.

Toronto Raptors (2) vs. Orlando Magic (7)

The Raptors after flattering to deceive so much recently look like genuine contenders this year and should have little problem disposing of the Magic. Toronto 4-2 on their way to the finals

Philadelphia 76ers (3) vs. Brooklyn Nets (6)

This could hinge on whether Joel Embiid is fit for the 76ers. If he is this could be over quickly. If not then this could be close. We think he will be back for some of the series and so give Philly the edge. 76ers 4-3

Boston Celtics (4) vs. Indiana Pacers (5)

The Celtics failed miserably to live up to the pre-season hype but should have enough to get past the Pacers, who are typically relying on their defensive strengths. Over 7 games you can’t get away with that. Boston 4-3
