What Is GW1516?

If you’ve read our recent article on big baby Miller failing his drug test, this chemical might be familiar to you.

He was caught using GW501516, which is a banned substance in boxing. But what actually is it?

It’s also known as Cardarinel, and was originally developed in the 1990s as a treatment for diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease; but was discontinued in 2007 after it was linked to the rapid development of cancer in several organs during trials on mice. Its used by some for fat loss, in the context of athletic enhancement, GW1516 also has benefits as an endurance aid. Weight occurs because the body is forced to use fat instead of carbohydrates for energy, this is why it is especially popular for people who are “cutting” as you lose weight quickly but maintain good performance physically. GW1516 has recently been linked to a number of positive doping tests in endurance related sports. After a number of positive tests for GW1516 in 2013, WADA and ASADA released a warning on its health risks. In 2015 and 2016 there were less than six positive tests for GW1516 globally each year. In 2017 however, the number of positive tests for GW1516 rose to 31.

The WADA specifically stated that “clinical approval has not, and will not be given for this substance”. It is believed by many to be very dangerous, and have many negative side effects; with this drug, the negatives definitely outweigh the positives… You could even be risking your life taking this drug.
