Toledo Holds Off Liberty To Win The Boca Raton Bowl

Toledo Holds Off Liberty To Win The Boca Raton Bowl
The Toledo Rockets finished the season on a high with a narrow win in the Boca Raton Bowl. This was their first Bowl win since winning this one back in 2015 and snapped a four-Bowl game losing streak. It was close though and Liberty came within a failed two-point conversion of at least forcing OT. The Rockets used their strong running game to their advantage controlling the time of possession.
They looked to be heading for a fairly comfortable win until the last few minutes but a 67-yard pass gave the Flames the chance to tie it up. The two-point play failed and Toledo did what they had previously, using their ground game to run out the clock.
This was the Flames’ first-ever Bowl loss. This is not as impressive as it sounds given they only moved up to the FBS in 2018. However, they had previously won three consecutive bowl games between 2019 & 2021. Head coach Hugh Freeze’s departure on the 28th of November no doubt had a bit of a disrupting influence, but whatever, they can look back on another good season, and hopefully they will be bowling again in 2023. It will be interesting to see how new head coach Josh Aldridge does.

New Orleans Bowl

Western Kentucky 44 South Alabama 23

In the night’s other bowl game, Western Kentucky dominated from the start to give C-USA their second bowl win. The game was 31-3 at the half, however to their credit South Alabama continued to play hard and the result was a thoroughly entertaining game for the neutral.   Between them, they racked up 1098 yards of offense and eight TDS. The result largely came down to South Alabama’s inability to run the ball. They only managed 44 yards on the ground from 25 attempts!

The highlights are below and they are well worth watching.
