Week two of the 2018 College season saw UCF rack up their 15th consecutive win and several of the playoff contenders run up big scores against mediocre opponents. Its still very early days but the SEC and Big Ten already look strong. Some of the weeks more interesting results:
Clemson 28, Texas A&M 26 – a bit of a scare for Clemson. A&M looks to be settling into the Jimbo Fisher model quite well and Kellen Mond finally looked like the QB we thought he could be.
OSU 52, Rutgers 3 – a proverbial walk in the park for the Buckeyes. The first test comes next week against TCU but on this showing, they may be the team to beat in the Big 10.
Oklahoma 49, UCLA 21 – A 5 TD day for Kyler Murry who will probably be off to play Baseball once his college days are over. Chip Kelly will be fairly happy with UCLA’s resilience despite special teams not helping. Oklahoma will stay high in the polls but we were not convinced by this performance.
Stanford 17, USC 3 – Quality win for Stanford, thanks in the main to the Running prowess of Bryce Love. This probably ended any hopes USC had of making the playoffs.
Penn State 51, Pitt 6 – better by Pen State but they were helped by some sloppy play by Pittsburgh who must have infuriated their home fans by going for it on 4th Down when they could have potentially kicked a short FG to take the lead. Then another clanger by Kirk Christodoulou led to a second Penn State TD just before the half. should have been 9-7 up but go in 14-6 down.
ASU 16, MSU 13 – Big upset or are Michigan State way overrated (we didn’t rank them in our preseason top 25).
UCF 38, South Carolina State 0 – The Black Knights go marching on. Not the strongest of opposition but a shutout is a shutout and its 15 wins on the bounce. Two games in and its a combined score of 94-17!
Boise 62, UConn 7 – Big win and a new offensive yardage record of 818 and a conference win too!
Miami 77, Savannah 0 – Running up the score time. Why do teams with National Title aspirations keep arranging cupcake games? So they can set school records Miami had nine different players score touchdowns and won by the biggest margin in school history.
Kentucky 27, Fla 16 – Monster win for Kentucky who ended a 31 game losing streak against Florida stretching back to 1986. On this form, they will be heading for a bowl game for the 3rd consecutive year. Maybe they can end another unwanted streak having lost their last 4.
Colorado 33, Nebraska 28 – The Scott Frost era in Nebraska didn’t go quite according to plan still what do you expect when you give away 3 turnovers. Colorado will be pleased to pinch this one having been outgained by 170 yards.
TTU 77, Lamar 0 – not of great note apart from TTU racking up 7 rushing TDs and Karma being a bitch – Lamar thrashed Kentucky Christian (a tiny school with less than 500 students) 70-7 the previous week. As hey say what comes around goes around, although not normally this quickly.
Iowa 13, ISU 3 – Bragging rights go to Iowa who has now won 4 in a row against Iowa State.
Maryland 45, BGSU 14 – a Big late effort by the Terps wrapped this one up. Bowling green had the lead at the half and were only trailing by 3 going into the 4th Quarter. Then they give up 28 points!
Texas 28, Tulsa 21 – Far from impressive but the Longhorns showed a lot of tenacity. Marylands win makes week one’s loss to them a little more palatable. We could be wrong but maybe Texas is a good team in the making.
