Pac-12, Power Five

Did The PAC 12’s Playoff Hopes End On Sunday?

The 2019 College Football season is only six weeks old but it already looks like we know which of the Power Five Conferences are the first to be eliminated from the race for the National Championship. To be fair only Oregon and Washington had even the faintest of hopes, and although the Ducks managed to win in a dour affair against Cal, Washington losing at Stanford has probably ended Oregon’s last hope for a resume win.

Oregon’next three games are:

Colorado at home, who is 3-2 with a loss to Airforce. No bump for winning that one.

Washington away, now a 2 loss team.

Washington State also a two-loss team, but one whos best win is against Houston.

Even if they sweep them – by no means certain, it’s hard to see enough of the teams above them losing to allow them to move up much. Then add to that Florida’s win over Auburn and their “quality loss” looks a lot less shiny. Auburn still have to face Alabama, LSU & Georgia so they could end up a four-loss team. So even a 12-1 Oregon with a win over say Utah in the Conference Championship would have to overcome the SEC Champion (there are still four no loss teams there) The Big 10 Champion (again 4 unbeaten teams) and most likely Oklahoma & Clemson. Good luck with that. Even the looming Red River Rivalry in the Big 12 is of little help as should Texas pull off a shock they would stay ahead of the Ducks while Oklahoma probably would too.

Still, they are now nicely placed in the Pac 12 North and a win the Conference Championship would send them to the Rose Bowl, which will be nice way to send Justin Herbert off to the NFL.
