What does the 4th June have to offer, well on this day...

The general assembly of the united nations named the 4th of June as the International day of innocent children victims of Aggression. The day was announced in 1982 to call attention to the urgent need to protect the rights of children.

On this day in 1970, Tonga gained independence from Britain and so celebrates with a public holiday.

In 1944 on June 4th Rome was Liberated from the German rear-guard when the US 9th Army, led by General Mark Clark, entered the Capital.

This day in 1738 saw the birth of George III who served as King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 to 1820. George III was often referred to as "The Mad King".

On the 4th June 1784 Marie Thible, of Lyons, France, accompanied by a pilot (Monsieur Fleurant), became the first woman in history to fly in a free balloon.

Finland's armed forces honour June 4th 1867 the birth anniversary of Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, who was a military leader and sixth president of Finland with their Flag Day.
