15th June - On this Day

What does the 15th June have to offer, well on this day...

The 15th of June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The day is to raise awareness about the global social issue that affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue that deserves the attention of the international community. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on some of our older citizens.

Since 1988 the 15th of June has also been National Prune Day, a day to honour the prune for its health benefits as well as its delicious goodness. Celebrate the prune with festivals, cancer awareness workshops, school nutrition days and educational cooking events.

On this day in 1215, King John of England sealed  the Magna Carta "in the meadow called Ronimed between Windsor and Staines on the fifteenth day of June in the seventeenth year of our reign." Continually reinterpreted, the Magna Carta influenced the rise of England's constitutional monarchy and lent historical weight to 18th-century ideas about inalienable natural laws. It is still invoked popularly and in jurisprudence as a symbol of the written law's power to subdue tyranny.
