Manchester United Changed Kits Back in 1996!

April 1996, Manchester United travelled to Southampton. Manchester United were in top form heading into that game, winning 11 games out of 12 and being top of the league! They seemed unstoppable and hard to contain, they were destroying teams left right and centre, they really were the team to beat back in 1996, however, they were up against bottom of the league Southampton and everyone were thinking it’ll be an easy game for them… they were wrong! They were wearing grey kits in the first half and got destroyed by bottom of the league Southampton! 3-0 at half time and no one in the crowd knew what was happening! The players blamed the kit for their poor performance, however in the second half they changed their kits! From grey to blue and white. They got one goal back but lost the match 3-1! Sir Alex Ferguson immediately at half time said, “get that kit off, you’re getting changed!” the likes of Paul Scholes and David Beckham were involved in this incident!

This is the first time in history this has happened! Sir Alex Ferguson ended up getting fined by FA, the fine was worth £10,000, however Ferguson said, “it’s the best £10,000 I’ve ever spent”. Players believed that they couldn’t see each other with the grey kits on! People now disagree with this due to Liverpool having a grey kit in 2008, so 12 years later. This was most likely the first and last time we see this happen. This could have been because the kit was too light, some players were unable to see each other since it was sunny! Who knows! If this were to happen again… Who would do it now?
