Palm Springs Plot

Nyles and Sarah meet on the 9th November at the wedding reception of Sarah's Half-Sister Tala and Abe. The day starts with Nyles waking up in the same room as Misty, Nyles girlfriend and one of the bridesmaids of Tala. Nyles performs an impromptu speech at the reception stepping in for the ill-prepared Sarah the maid of honour. Later in the evening Nyles and Sarah bond over drinks, and Nyles reveal to Sarah that his girlfriend is cheating on him with Trevor the cowboy officiant of the wedding.

They both make their way away from the reception to have sex in a secluded location, however, before they could Nyles is attached by a mysterious figure with a hunting bow. Nyles runs away and is shot multiple times by the mysterious figure we learn to be Roy.

Retreating into a mysterious glowing cave Nyles escapes Roy, but he is followed by the concerned Sarah. Nyles Warns Sarah not to follow him, Sarah, ignores Nyles and approaches. Both of them are consumed by the mysterious glow of the cave that we find out is a vortex.

Sarah wakes up on the same day for the second time and confronts Nyles about what he has done to her. Nyles explains that being pulled into the vortex she is now stuck in a time loop with him living the same day over and over again.

After an initial struggle with the reality of her new situation, Sarah appears to accept the situation, and they both make the most of their endless time loop, and bond until they eventually fall in love with each other.

We are reintroduced to the mysterious figure who we learn in more detail as Roy a man Nyles previously met at the wedding and after having an enjoyable evening of drink and drug use Nyles takes Roy through the vortex who becomes angry at being in the time loop.

Sarah reveals to Nyles that she doesn't want to stay in the time loop anymore and plans to find a way out, while Nyles struggles with life returning back to the way it is or dying as a consequence of meddling with the vortex.

Five Minutes Spare's Review

A solid 3.5/5

This is a funny film, the two main characters bounce off each other well and the storyline isn't a simple rehash of groundhog day. The movie flows very well and the storyline does not become stagnant at any point. An easy watch with plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested.

3.5/5

If you look at reviews before watching this film you do go into it thinking "this is just going to be a rip-off of groundhog day", but don't worry you won't be disappointed. Are there similarities? well, of course, it's a film about being stuck in a time loop, as soon as you say that everyone is going to immediately compare it to Groundhog Day, and because it's also a rom-com it makes it even easier to do.

However, the storyline is great, Andy Samberg plays Nyles a happy go lucky young man stuck in a time-loop where every day his girlfriend, Misty cheats on him with a Cowboy officiant while attending the wedding of Misty's friend. Cristin Milioti plays Sarah Wilder, the half-sister of the bride Tala, who appears to be a general mess and she basically describes herself as the disappointment of the family.

With Andy Samberg playing his usual comedic role fits into comfortably, which shows on-screen and the chemistry between the two main actors makes this film just work.

The introduction of Roy, the mysterious dark character, that hunts and torture Nyles every couple of months, brings a great element of dark humour that runs through the film and brings another level to separate it from the traditional Rom-Com. J.K Simmons brings Roy to life, in a way that really only J.K Simmons could do.

The Relationship of Nyles and Sarah throughout is nothing short of entertaining and what they get up to while stuck in the loop will have you belly laughing at times, and entertained at its worst.

Without giving too much away just in case you read this before watching, the story brings in Theoretical physics to explain what the hell is going on with the vortex.

Both Sarah and Nyles have their ups and downs, "will they, won't they" scenario, that's not too cheesy. All in all, it's a good film. It won't change your life but it will keep you entertained for 90 minutes, with a good few laughs along the way.

Definitely worth a watch!
