The Finest Hours is a film that is based on a very true story of the oil tanker, SS Pendleton which was a ship that ended up sinking 10 miles off the coast of chatham, Massachusetts in 1952. The Finest Hours is a film that follows the story of the ship men stuck on the ship and also Bernie and his crew which he put together, Bernie crew excited of Engine-man Third Class Andrew Fitzgerald (Kyle Gallner), Seaman Richard Livesey (Ben Foster) and Seaman Ervin Maske (John Magaro).
Aboard the ship were 33 men who had served the ship being cut in half and one of these men was called Ray Sybert, Ray had grown up on the ship and on the sea so he knew a lot about the ship and the waves. Ray was seen warning the Captain at the beginning of the film about having to slow the boat down as the crack that went along the middle of the ship wasn’t going to hold through the night as the welding was rusting from the salt in the sea water, and he turned out to be right when the ship was cut in half by the waves. In the film you watch the attitude of the crew change towards Ray, as he is known to be the man that sits below deck in the engine room only talking to two of his ship mates. In the film the men try to get of the boat by taking the lifeboats on the side of the ship to get of the ship and to go to land that way but Ray finds out and cuts the boats down before they have a chance to get in them, you watch the boats land in the water and straight away get carried by the waves into the side of the boat. This is when the crew realise that Ray does in fact know what he is doing and they follow his lead. He turns out to be the man that takes charge of keeping the men alive and ends up making part of the crew use a metal girder to steer the ship due to it losing its hydraulics which causes the rudder to turn aimlessly side to side which helps them to run the boat ashore, this however is not correct as Ray tried to make sure that the ship stayed away from the shore in real life. In the film the men try to get of the boat by taking the little boats on the side of the ship to get of the ship and to go to land that way but Ray finds out and cuts the boats down before they have a chance to get in them, you watch the boats land in the water and straight away get carried by the waves into the side of the boat. This is when the crew realise that Ray does in fact know what he is doing and they follow his lead.
Bernie and his crew ended up traveling through the night with no navigation to save the 33 men who were stuck on the tanker that was cut in half by the sea. Throughout this Bernie’s thoughts was how do I get over the barge without dying and killing his other three crew members. Once over the barge Bernie was relieved but once he got to the SS Pendleton said it looked like a ghost ship and they weren't even sure if there was anyone on the ship until the man on top of the deck started to shine the light to show that there was indeed life aboard. In the film the men start to come down the ladder the second they see the little coast guard boat, which Bernie and the crew said was indeed true. There was only one man that ended up dying from the 33 men and that was a man know as George ‘Tiny’ Myers as this was because as he was coming down the ladder he jumped to get onto the little boat and missed it which ended up with him falling into the water and getting crushed between the ship and the boat which they are sure if he died straight away but Bernie didn’t want to risk anymore lives diving so he had no choice but to get everyone else of the boat as it was slowly sinking with them on it.
When getting all of the crew back to shore the men are met by the town and are taken straight away into the warmth and are given food and blankets to warm up. Bernie and his crew will always be remembered for what they did that night in their town and around the world. This film may not all be correct but it definitely shows the story of what all the men went through and for that I love this film as it gives people somewhat of an understanding of what happened at sea that winters night in 1952.
