Me Before You is a film based on the book Me Before You.
Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) a businessman who is making a name for himself, unfortunately ends up in an accident that leaves him paralyzed and in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Lou Clarke (Emilia Clarke) is a woman who is from a small town in the British country sides, a place where everyone knows everyone, but the village isn’t a well of place and a lot of companies are having to shut down, and one of these places just happens to be where Lou is working, a small café. Once Lou ends up being let go, she goes to her job coach see if there is anything going at all that she could have as she needs the money for her family. This is where a job as a carer for Will comes up, all she would have to do is make sure he eats and takes his medicines and is also safe.
Throughout the film you watch and find out the mind set of someone who is in a wheelchair, by this I mean Will used to be someone who could and would do anything but now he has no choose but to do the same routine every day because in his head he thinks that being in a wheelchair is the worst thing to ever happen to him. However, Lou is a unique person in the way that she dresses and the way she thinks of the world and turns out to be the type of person that Will needs in his life as she isn’t just going to sit there and allow him to wither away in self-pity. The reason that she is hired by Will’s mother, is because she believes Lou will be able to change Wills mind on life and wanting to kill himself in Switzerland.
Once Lou finds out about Will wanting to end his life, she try’s everything in her power to prove to Will that just because he is in a wheelchair doesn’t mean he can’t achieve things in his life. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to matter how much, Lou tries to change Wills mind it doesn’t work as he just doesn’t see this being how wants to spends the rest of his life being sick and having to have people looking after him and doing the simplest things for him. This film really makes you see what its like for someone in a wheelchair and what can go through their heads, but it also shows what it can do to the people around them and how it affects their lives.
