What’s in a Name?
People have been handed out nicknames for millennia. They are usually, but not always, bestowed with affection, by a person or group of people who know the subject intimately. Nicknames are derived from various sources. These are quite often based on the subject’s actual name, appearance, physical prowess, achievements, or even where they live.
For instance, did you know Joseph Stalin was actually christened Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili? The name ‘Stalin’ is a nickname that simply means ‘steel’. Do you know who Edson Arantes do Nascimento is? Of course, the Brazilian footballer is universally much better known by his nickname ‘Pele’.
Many footballers throughout the decades have been given some great nicknames. None more so than in the English Leagues.
