The Birth of the British Sitcom
The first British TV comedy was Hancock’s Half Hour broadcast by the BBC in 1956. Adopted from radio, it starred popular comedy actor Tony Hancock as Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock put into a series of awkward situations. Hence, the British sitcom was born!
Since the 1960s, there have been literally hundreds of British sitcoms broadcast on the telly, both at home and overseas. While there have obviously been a few stinkers and some degree of mediocrity in the production of the British sitcom, there has also been plenty to laugh out loud about!
