British TV Comedy
The first real comedy show on British TV was Hancock’s Half Hour. First broadcasted by the BBC in 1956, it starred Tony Hancock as a cantankerous, single, middle-aged man dealing with life’s vicissitudes. The popularity of Britain’s TV comedy shows grew throughout the 1960s, but it was the 1970s when the sitcom came into its own. Obviously, not all of them were great but there were plenty that made us laugh out loud. Here’s a quiz on some of the classic British TV comedies of the 1970s.
