Week Five continued the trend for close games this year with eleven being single-score affairs. The trend started on Thursday night in a game we were glad we didn’t sit up to watch with the Colts winning the battle of the field goals in Denver to get their second win of the year. All five of the Broncos’ games this year have been decided by one score or less and their three losses have all been largely the result of poor play calling.
The London game was a classic game of two halves as the Giants came back to win. Things are not clicking this year for Green Bay on both sides of the ball and this was a bad loss to an understrength Giants team.
Blame The QB
Several QBs are under pressure following painful losses including Carson Wentz who was publicly criticized by his head coach after Washington slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat. It was a bit harsh on a QB who threw for 359 yards and 2TDs. The Commanders had a chance to win it but Wentz was picked off at the 1-yard line with 6 seconds to play.
Given there was so little time left on the clock running it was probably a better option. Anyway, Ron Rivera has since issued a public apology, but it might not be enough to repair morale in the camp.
Jared Goff has been playing quite well but didn’t do much this week. The Lions were shut out in New England and Goff ended up throwing 35 times for 229 yards. With an interception and a fumble, it was no surprise that he ended up with a QB Rating of 6.5!
Last Man Standing
Philadelphia Maintained their 100% start with a narrow win at Arizona. The Cardinals missed a potential tying field goal with just over a minute left, but overall the Eagles just about deserved it. This sets up a nice NFC East clash with Dallas next week.
Houston also got their first win of the season to add to their opening tie. They may be 1-3-1 but two of their losses were one-score affairs. They remain one of the favourites for the no.1 overall pick in next year’s draft but there are reasons to be hopeful for their fans.
Other Talking Points
Rookie QB Kenny Pickett’s first start for Pittsburgh could have gone better score-wise, however, he played pretty well considering the lack of talent around him. This could be a long hard season for Steelers fans, but at least they look to have their QB of the future. Now they can focus on sorting out their awful secondary.
The Dolphins are not having much luck with their QBs this year and they ended up playing their third-string one on Sunday. Still, at least, it will give rookie Skylar Thompson a chance to shine.
Seattle is not having a great season, however, we are pleased to see Tariq Woolen get another interception. That’s his third consecutive game with one. He was one of our intriguing prospects in the 2022 draft and it goes to show there is plenty of talent lurking in the later rounds of the draft.
