The government has revealed that gatherings of 6 or more people will be illegal from the 14th of September.

Coronavirus cases have been rising in the UK.

The rules, that come into effect Monday, have been put in place to stop even further rises in coronavirus cases, after a sharp rise recently.

Sports teams, workplaces, people from the same household and schools are exempt from the rules; it only really applies to people meeting from other households, whether it’s inside or outside.

Fines will be handed out to those breaking the rules, with a £100 fine for those who don’t comply, which can reach a maximum of £3200 in certain circumstances.

A preview of the upcoming brief by the government says: “We need to act now to stop the virus spreading. So we are simplifying and strengthening the rules on social contact – making them easier to understand and for the police to enforce.

“It is absolutely critical that people now abide by these rules and remember the basics – washing your hands, covering your face, keeping space from others, and getting a test if you have symptoms.”

Health advisor Jonathan Van-Tam added to the brief, saying: “People have relaxed too much. This is a continuing threat.

“This is no longer about the disease in specific hotspots, such as Leicester and the North West.

“There is a general and creeping geographic trend across the UK. Disease levels are now beginning to turn up on a wider geographical basis.

“We’ve got to start taking this very seriously again.”

Over 2,400 new cases were confined in the UK yesterday, which is another sharp rise; we haven’t seen numbers like this for a while now. Recently Bolton has been locked down too due to a large rise in cases, with restrictions such as takeaways closing at 10pm and a ban on visiting certain people and households.

Further restrictions countrywide are expected to be put in place if cases don’t fall, so only time will tell what is next for the UK.
