Cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool have had a huge rise in cases recently, as concern grows within local councils.

Up to Saturday, over 700 people caught coronavirus in Birmingham, marking the biggest recent rise in one place. Such rises are what are sparking fears that the government may put the whole country in a lockdown again.

The rise in cases could be attributed to the return of children and staff to schools. Cases have risen by almost 3000 countrywide since around the time children returned to school, which has lead to people making a connection between the two things. It makes sense though – children and staff may be social distancing, but with such a contagious virus, it’s hard to stop the spread because everyone is still close together. For example, as many as 200 pupils in Liverpool have had to self isolate because of outbreaks in 8 school settings.

Despite the rise in the big cities, Bolton has the most cases, with 120 cases per 100,000 people there.

Health secretary Matt Hancock addressed the rise today, saying: “The rise in cases in Bolton is partly due to socialising by people in their 20s and 30s, we know this from contact tracing,”

“Just because we’ve come through one peak, it does not mean we cannot see another one coming”.

Worldwide, there are over 7 million active cases, with over 2 million just in the USA alone. That’s over 1/4 of the cases. Scientists are still working on new treatments for the virus, and new ways to stop the spread.
