The 2019-20 Premier League Season

The 2019-20 Premier League Season

The most competitive Football league is starting up tonight, and it could be one of the most exciting seasons yet.

The season is kicking off at 8pm tonight with last years runners up Liverpool taking on Norwich City. With Liverpool only losing one game last season, ironically to the league champions Manchester city, we could be in for an exciting season with a climatic end, as Liverpool won the Champions League in June, and haven’t really changed their roster much this transfer window.

Predictions for the season

Manchester City are obviously going to be favourites to win the league again, as they have the best team with the best players, without a shadow of a doubt. But Liverpool weren’t far away from winning last season; there were very few points in it. I get the impression that Liverpool and Manchester City are very even teams, shown by the fact their previous bout was settled by penalties. As a Liverpool fan, it’s very hard to not be biased towards them, but I can realistically see them winning the league this year. Pep Guardiola has dominated all the big leagues in the world, apart from the French first league. In my opinion, he will try and aim to win the Champions League this year with Manchester City, with his sights set on managing PSG the year after if he achieves this. This potential focus on the Champions League opens a window opportunity for Liverpool and any other team who prove themselves able enough to challenge the top teams. Tottenham will be confident with new signings and their performance last season, so I do see them as a potential threat. Not just to Liverpool but even Manchester City and everyone else in the league. Chelsea have, and always will have a strong team. I can’t see them not being in the top 4. Saying this, they did have some very poor games last season, and certain players performances have been below standard recently.

So, my top 4 is as follows, assuming City are aiming for a Champions League win:

  1. Liverpool
  2. Manchester City
  3. Tottenham
  4. Chelsea

There are a lot of teams that can’t keep up with the competition in the Premier League, like Brighton for example. Last season they really struggled to stay in the league, missing the relegation zone by just 2 points. I don’t think they can maintain the same level of football this season, they’ll succumb to the pressure, and indefinitely end up in the relegation zone. Same goes for Newcastle. It’s a matter of time before both of these teams end up in the Championship again. Aston Villa couldn’t even finish top 5 in a lower league, that says it all for me. Despite all this, I’m not putting Newcastle in the relegation zone. They finished the season with 2 wins, showing they can play a high level of football, but as I said before, whether its this year or in 5 years, I believe they’ll be joining the Championship soon enough. Southampton ended the previous season very poorly, not even surpassing 40 points for the season. Without a win in the last 5 games of last season, it suggests they’ve maybe taken their foot off the gas a little bit, or simply can’t keep up with other teams. I don’t expect them to perform overly well this season, especially at the start. How can you expect to finish on such a poor note and come back playing your best football? Despite this, they are stronger than all of the teams joining the premiership this year, so I don’t think they’ll be relegated. In my opinion, from past performances, all of the teams coming into the Premier league this season have a chance of being relegated.

So, my bottom 3 is as follows,

  1. Brighton
  2. Sheffield United
  3. Aston Villa

This season is going to very eventful, and will keep football fans far and wide on the edge of their seats. It’s going to be especially interesting to see all the top teams fight for a place in the top 4. Can Manchester United make a comeback after a few very average seasons? Will Liverpool win the title at the end of the season, robbing City of what has been theirs so long and putting an end to their dominance of England’s top division? Who knows. But everyone can’t wait to find out!
