Secret Sauce

Overview

Aimee’s hybrid child is now starting to grow up, and the pair decide to go on a shopping trip. Aimee makes it as fun as possible regardless of whether they are walking through empty shops and deserted streets. However, Pigtails alerts her mother she can smell smoke and has the jump for cover. We see a man walking the streets.

They both make it back safely, but just like Gus Pigtails is intrigued about the world around her and wants to talk to people on the radio, but her mother must remind her it’s only for listening. While both finish up eating, Pigtails runs outside with the scraps and puts them in a bush. She has been hiding and taking care of another hybrid she has named Bobby without her mother’s knowledge but is quickly welcomed in.

Adi and Rani sit and have a heart to heart about how much Adi has sacrificed to try and keep his wife safe and well over the years. However, he is still struggling with the fact that he will need to use a live hybrid to ensure his cure will work to run the tests he needs to. As he leaves for work, he is greeted by Nancy, his next-door neighbour, who voices her growing concerns over the fact that there will be another outbreak of the sick in the community and ask Dr Singh how they will protect themselves.

They both notice the purple flower growing in his garden linked to the sick growing in his front yard. He quickly sprays it and goes on his way. On his way back from home, he is glad to see the flower has died however finds Nancy sitting in his kitchen with Rani talking about how she thinks there should be weekly tests throughout the community to make sure no one has contacted the sick. While Adi tries to reason with her trying to protect Rani, he tells her they haven’t got that many tests to be able to do that, and Nancy reveals she has had growing suspicions about Rani having the sick. The two argue, and Nancy rushes out of the house to confirm with the other neighbours when Adi’s reaction confirms it for her when suddenly she’s kicked in the chest by their horse Trixie. When Adi goes to help her, Rani stops him, and they take her body to his work and hide her in the freezer there.

The Animal Army take Jepp and Gus back to their base in an abandoned theme park. They have never saved a hybrid before and are not too keen on Jepp with him being an adult. The leader tells Gus about how people call her Bear because that is her favourite animal and assures him nothing will happen to Jepp without her say so but tells Gus about her background story, how her parents were murdered by grownups how she does not trust them. Bear has a run-in with Tiger and tells her that nothing should happen to Jepp as she wants to know why he has been helping Gus and why Gus has this relationship with him; however, Tiger wants to kill him.

Gus is adamant that he wants to see Big Man, so he is mortified to find him tied to a chair when they take him. Bear reveals he has the markings of the last man, branding on the chest, but Jepp explains he used to be on as it was a kill or be killed world, but he is no longer part of the organisation. While Jepp tried to get Gus to leave as he is sure they are about to kill him, Gus wraps his arms around Jepp and refuses to leave. Jepp is escorted out to the woods, where Bear makes a speech telling the army there won’t be an execution and how they have lost their way. In the uproar of the announcement, the army is split in two. Some want to kill Jepp, some don’t, but while they argue Jepp, and Gus manages to escape. Looking at the army she created, she realises it’s not something she wants to be a part of anymore and takes off after Gus and Jepp.
