ITV boss says Love Island aftercare ‘can’t be forever’

ITV’s chief executive Carolyn McCall has said the broadcaster cannot keep up the aftercare of Love Island contestants “indefinitely”.

There was criticism towards ITV and the show after the death of Mike Thalassitis who appeared on the show in 2017. Mike Thalassitis passed away aged 26 on March 16, 2019 after taking his own life. His body was found in a park in  Edmonton, North London.

Carolyn McCall said “We can do everything we possibly can to look after people and to do our duty of care but you can’t do that forever,”

“There has got to be a framework and it will come to an end.”

However, she has said that they were changing their procedures to make sure that counsellors do stay in contact with former contestants for longer. They will also give them training on financial and social media training to go along with the mental health counseling. The ITV boss also acknowledged the death of Sophie Gradon (former Love Island Contestant) and revealed how tragic it was for the team.

Love Island winner Dani Dyer has given her views on the debate saying many of her fellow contestants had experienced moments when they had been struggling. In an interview she also detailed the tests she had to go through before and after the villa.
