Fatherhood follows the story of Matthew Logelin, a widowed father who becomes a single parent after the unexpected death of his wife. The show Premiered on the 18th June 2021 on Netflix.
The opening scene shows Matthew stood at the plinth at the funeral of his wife Liz Logelin, from there we are taken to a cut scene of Matthew and Liz in the doctor's office, Liz heavily pregnant with her first child and discussing the birth of the baby. Due to complications, it is explained that the baby will need to be delivered by a caesarean section that same day, approximately two weeks before the due date.
After the delivery of their baby Maddy Logelin, Liz suffered from a Pulmonary Embolism which occurs when a blood clot gets lodged in an artery in the lung. Liz dies suddenly leaving Matthew Widowed and as a single father.
From there we follow Matthew and his story of raising Maddy as a single widowed father, from the doubts his and Liz's family have of his abilities to raise a child to the struggles of being a single parent.
The film touches upon the many challenges of single parenthood from the relationship with employers, social life and domestic care.
