BBC documentary Car Crash: Who’s lying?

The BBC has released a new documentary exploring the aftermath of a car crash, it shows what damage dangerous driving can do. It follows the events of a car crash on the B2177 Southwick Road, Portsmouth.

The crash happened on Saturday 23rd January 2016 at around 11.17pm, the car was a 2004 Nissan Almera. The car was told to be speeding on the B2177 going around 80mph where it went off the road and crashed into a tree.  The documentary tells how there was one 19-year-old fatality, one 18-year-old in a coma with 50/50 chances of life and one person with no injuries (later found out there was another boy that came out alive).

The documentary shows they police man’s body camera footage and footage from the police station throughout. Danny Lee, 25, was found at the scene in shock with no injuries, he was seen to keep changing his mind between how many people where in the car. Officers were now confused as they did not know why he kept saying three when only two others were found in the car. Whilst in shock DannyLee admitted to driving but seconds later asked who was driving. On scene a boy was given CPR, but it was not successful meaning this was now a case of murder by dangerous driving.

At the Hospital Danny Lee was checked out with no injuries and therefore was under investigation for suspected driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs. He had blood taken and results came back with no drink or drugs in his system that night. Later, he was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous drinking.

When arrested he told police that he was not the driver and it was his cousin, Zax (even though he was not at the scene).  There is a lot of lies from one person in the documentary therefore it took over a year to get justice for the family who lost their loved one. It all came down to forensics to show who was driving at the time, there was CCTV footage at a petrol station that showed Danny Lee driving, but this was not at the scene therefore it was not enough to prove it was him.

The documentary shows the journey in what happened to find out which person was driving and who caused the death of 19-year-old Luke Fletcher. Luke Fletcher was also known as Laura (his female persona) he was known for his acting and he was not afraid to show Laura.

The boy that was in a coma is 18-year-old Sonny, he came out of the coma but is left with a significant head injury but was able to give an interview on what he remembered.

Mobile phones helped the police as there was text messages that helped retrieve steps and CCTV from the night.

The documentary was made to show the impact of dangerous driving and what young people impressing can lead to. It is reported that young people are three times more likely to die due to a car crash than guns, knives and alcohol combined. It shows the impact it can have on family and friends as well and why it is important to drive safe.
