How Technological Advancements Have Affected Businesses

In recent years, technology has advanced at an impressive rate.

Between 2000 and the present day, phones, for example,  have gone from slow, simple flip up phones to fast, practical advanced hand held computers which can carry out a large number of tasks in a short amount of time.

To give an idea of this change, here of some specs comparing a phone released in 2000, to a phone released recently:

Nokia 3310

  • No camera
  • 16 MB RAM
  • 2.4” screen

iPhone 8

  • Hexa-core (2x Monsoon + 4x Mistral)
  • Apple GPU (three-core graphics)
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 64/256 GB memory
  • 12 MP, f/1.8, 28mm, phase detection autofocus, OIS, quad-LED (dual tone) flash camera

These developments in hardware don’t just impact the company that has developed the products; they directly impact everyone’s lives. Advancements in these technologies allow companies to interact with their employees in different ways. For example, 20 years ago, a business and or company could not take digital copies of work with them anywhere they go, and be able to use them over multiple devices. Cloud technologies are good at helping to achieve this. Cloud services allow a user to store files in the “cloud” to be accessed anywhere. Mobile phones in recent years have been able to download apps which can assist in work; you can even create slide show presentations and edit pictures on a mobile phone. You can also hold conference calls with your work colleagues with apps such as oovoo, which allow multiple people to video chat at the same time, or you can use Skype. Skype allows users to video call across multiple devices such as phones, laptops and PCs. This is convenient as users can call each other from multiple locations and at any time of the day. The only drawback to this is that if the users don’t have an internet connection, you can’t call them.
