UEFA Men’s Player of the Year is…

This year sees the second time Messi and Ronaldo haven’t won this award and marks a new era in football and football fans around the world. Nowadays, many midfielders and defenders don’t get noticed for how great they really are and don’t ever get a chance to win anything like this, however these past 2 years, we have seen a midfielder and a defender win this award. The winner of the 2019 UEFA Men’s Player of the year trophy is… Virgil Van Dijk! He managed to beat the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Salah and even Modric who was the winner last time.

Virgil Van Dijk has had an incredible season and will continue to perform for Liverpool as well, almost winning the Premier League with 1 loss to their record against the current Premier League winners Manchester City, Coming second and winning the Champions League and being unstoppable and difficult to get past when playing for club and even for country! He really is the best defender right now and can be named one of the best players in the world right now. What an incredible season he really has had and there is still potentially more to come…

Last year saw Luka Modric win the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award and then go on to win the Ballon D’or, could we be seeing Van Dijk winning the Ballon D’or this year? The first defender since Fabio Cannavaro to win this award. This could happen.
