The Premier League is officially back after an unusually short break – and what an opening weekend it was.
The champ vs champ game is what most people are talking about, as the newly promoted Leeds squad put 3 past Liverpool at Anfield. Both defences were sloppy at many points, with Leeds giving away two important penalties – which Mo Salah obviously tucked away with ease – and the highly rated Virgil Van Dijk making some mistakes at the back which ended up costing the reds a goal.
However, he was sharp as ever up front, as he put a powerful header past the Leeds keeper. Leeds, who were criticised for their finishing ability last season, were clinical at Anfield, with attackers beating Liverpool’s world-class defenders; scoring solo goals, and burying volleys in the bottom corner. The two teams were matched in terms of their aggressive pressing, with Leeds pressing equally hard, and eventually capitalising on Liverpool’s sloppiness with a goal from an in-form Bamford.
Mo Salah, as usual, saved the day, scoring 3 of Liverpool’s 4 goals; 2 penalties, and one top corner volley from inside the box. Both teams lacked defensively, but you can’t be too critical to Leeds in that aspect because they need to fully adjust to a higher level of football. The same, however, can’t be said about the reds! Much more is expected from the defending champions, especially when, without those two penalties, they could have easily started the season with a loss.
The match finished 4-3 in the favour of Liverpool, and many people are excited to see what the season holds for both sides. More recent results can be found below.
