The title and automatic promotion spot in the 2019 EFL Championship are now decided and congratulations go to Norwich City who are back in the Premiership after a two-year absence. Joining them will be Sheffield United who were last in the top flight back in 2007, and whose journey back involved a stay in the third tier.

Longtime leaders Leeds United stumbled across the finishing line with three defeats in their final four games and they will now have to endure the arduous playoff route back starting with a semi-final against 6th Derby County who ironically finished sixth last season as well.  The other semifinal will be between last seasons beaten playoff finalists Aston Villa and West Bromwich who were relegated last season.  If history is anything to go by we should be in for 5 close games.

Rotherham, Bolton & Ipswitch were all relegated before the final games, and for Bolton, in particular, the future looks hazy given their financial woes which included having to postpone the game against Brentford due to the players not having been paid. this is an extremely unusual situation with the last occurrence we can find taking place when the Walsall Swifts players had refused to take to the pitch against Newcastle United on Saturday, December 29th 1894 because the club wasn’t paying their wages. Let’s hope they can come through this as they are one of the most historically famous clubs in England.
