League One Luton Town Return to the Second Tier

Luton Town clinched the League One title thanks to a 3-1 win over Oxford United at the weekend. This is quite a feat considering they were playing in the Non-League five seasons ago, however, it is worth noting that they were in the past a frequent visitor to the top tier of English football, and were last in the top flight back in the 1991-2 season. Barnsley who were relegated last season managed to bounce back up and had a chance of the title going into the last game but lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers. Still commendable achievements by both given that Sunderland were strong preseason favourites and Portsmouth and Charlton also finished behind them.

The playoffs will be contended by Charlton who finished third by virtue of having a goal difference of one better than Portsmouth while Sunderland in fifth and Doncaster Rovers sixth complete the lineup. The unlucky team was Peterborough who ended up 7th a point behind Rovers.  Sunderland & Charlton have some playoff history and they met in the classic 1998 playoff which ended 4-4 with Charlton winning eventually 7-6 on penalties. The neutral won’t be disappointed if history repeats its self here.

The relegation spots literally went down to the wire and Southend had the great escape beating Sunderland 2-1 with an 87th-minute goal. Plymouth ended up going down on goal difference despite looking like they had escaped thanks to a 3-2 win over fellow relegation side Scunthorpe. Bradford City & Walsall will be playing in League Two next season also.
