Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri and captain Cesar Azpilicueta have both apologised after their side’s 6-0 defeat at Manchester City.
City led 4-0 after less than 25 minutes as Chelsea lost their third straight away game, conceding 12 goals without reply. They have now slipped to sixth in the Premier League table, just below rivals Arsenal on goal difference. “In the last three matches away we’ve played very badly so we need to say sorry,” said Chelsea’s manager.
Despite missing an open goal, Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero managed to bag a hat trick, completing it with a 56th minute penalty. It was Chelsea’s worst defeat since 1991, when they lost 7-0 to Nottingham Forest.
“We are conceding a lot of goals and we cannot accept that. All I can do is apologise to the fans because it is not acceptable.”
And when Sarri was asked if he was concerned about his future, he replied “I don’t know, you are asking me something which is not my job. I am worried about our performances, not about the club. You’d have to ask the club. I want to study, I want to understand. I do my best and the players do their best. For the moment I have to say only sorry.”
