Onward is a unique film, this film is set in the city of New Mushroomton, now this town isn’t like any that I know. This town is a where I would have loved to live when I was younger as it is full of mythical creatures, I’m talking unicorns, elves, trolls, mermaids, gnomes, goblins and many more.
New Mushroomton use to be what you read in story books as a kid where there was wizards and sorcerers which were learning and teaching magic to anyone that was able to learn it themselves whilst also helping anyone in need. Unfortunately, one day it was all forgotten about thanks to technology.
This film really hits on the single parent side of raising a family and what older siblings will do to make sure their brothers or sister feel like they still had the feeling of someone being there for them. Onward is based on two brothers who lost their father when they were young. Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) and his brother Barley Lightfoot (voiced by Chriss Pratt) are both known as elves. When they were both younger, they lost their dad to a sickness, Ian was extremely young, but Barley was able to grow up with his dad for a couple of years and make memories. Ian really misses his dad but unfortunately has no memories with him.
Ian Lightfoot is a typical awkward 16-year-old who is trying to figure out who he is. In the film you watch him go from having no self confidence to someone who knows who they are with the help from the journey he is about to go on. Barley is very much into playing games and following the history of New Mushroomton, the game is called Quests of Yore. For Ian’s 16th birthday their mum Laurel, gives them a gift which they were both left by there dad. A Wizard Staff with a very rare Phoenix Gem, a Phoenix gem is what holds the true power and can only work when a true wizard has hold of it. Within the case of the staff there was a magical spell called the Visitation Spell, which makes it possible to bring back a person for one whole day. This is where the game comes into the film as it helps both the brothers along the way with the quest they are about to embark on.
At first Barley thinks that he is the family wizard because of everything he knows, but it turns out Ian is the family wizard which is only know when Ian says the spell out load whilst sitting on his own, and the Phoenix gem starts to glow, but instead of being upset or angry about this Barley is proud of his little brother and starts to teach him everything he has ever learnt. The only problem they have is that they only bring back the bottom half of their dad. This is where the Quest begins, Ian and Barley go with the bottom half of their dad to find another Phoenix gem to bring the whole of their dad to spend the rest of the 24 hours with. Throughout this Quest Barley teaches Ian all about the history of the mythical creature and what they are all capable of doing, but as well as teaching Ian he proves to other creature what they are truly capable of as well. Barley also teaches Ian a lot of spells which he will need to be able to beat the curse that is on the Phoenix gem that they find at the end of the film.
Barley really is the best big brother anyone could have asked for, he stepped up when his dad died and taught Ian how to do a lot of things that a “dad” would, this is an important because there’s a lot of children around the world who are exactly like Barley and are looking after, helping a guardian or even being the parent for a lot of their siblings.
