Highwaymen – what do you know?
In Britain, they were known as highwaymen, and, in Ireland, sometimes as Rapparees, and elsewhere as land-pirates, mail-coach robbers, stagecoach robbers, road agents, or bushrangers. They were robbers and outlaws who plied their trade along the travelled highways of the world. In Britain and Ireland, they were active for around 200 years. Dick Turpin is undoubtedly the most celebrated and best remembered of all the British highwaymen. However, there were plenty of others who were just as notorious in their day.
