Ranking the 2021 NFL Draft Quarterback Class

The 2021 NFL draft looks set to feature an early run on the top QB’s and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that they are taken with the first four picks! We doubt that this will happen (barring a trade as the Falcons at pick four still have Matt Ryan, however, five are likely to go in round one.  However, there are several other QBs eligible this year and although some of these will go undrafted there will be a few teams who will chance a late-round pick on what might be the next Tom Brady.

Anyway here is how we rate the 2021 QB Class.

2021 NFL Draft Prospects – Probable Round One Picks

These are the top five by some margin:

1 Trevor Lawrence Clemson Jr 6-6 220

There is a 99.999999% chance that Trevor Lawrence is drafted first by the Jags in 2021. Not 100% – well he could get struck by lightning that’s how remote the prospect of him not being called first.  Overall Lawrence seems to have it all, measurables and record. He has the most QB wins in Clemson history and has been MVP in three bowl games. He has led the Tigers to the College Football playoffs in each of his three seasons and they won it all in 2019.

He is even married to his high school sweetheart and there are no discernable character flaws. We hate to gush over a player but he is potentially a generational QB. The only thing that could stop him is the dysfunctional nature of the Jacksonville Jaguars

2 Zach Wilson BYU Jr 6-3 210

Zachary Kapono Wilson to give him his full name is in our opinion the most intriguing QB prospect this year. After a couple of ok seasons with BYU, he suddenly sprang to life in 2020 throwing for 3692 yards in 12 games and scoring 33 TDs. Some will point to the relatively weak schedule that the Cougars played in 2020, however, he was not surrounded with talent like Trask and Jones were. His best receiver was Dax Milne who caught 8 TDs and although declared for the draft might struggle to even make a practice squad.

Wilson’s highlights reel makes fun viewing and if whoever drafts him gives him time and puts a bit of talent around him who knows how high his ceiling might be. We think he is nailed on to go in the 1st three picks and will probably go to the Jets which suits us as being Green Bay fans we would hate to see him go to the 49ers. Ok joking aside he is our no two and potentially the best risk to reward pick in the draft even this high.

3 Justin Fields Ohio St. Jr 6-3 228

Justine Fields unlike Wilson above played in a stacked Ohio State team in 2020. he was a walk-on transfer from Georgia in 2019 and in two seasons helped the Buckeyes reach the college playoffs both seasons, reaching the CFP Final in 2020.  There is not a whole lot of tape to watch for the reduced 2020 season, however, what is undeniable is that Fields is an accurate passer.

He completed 72.4% of his passes in 2020 and is fairly mobile too. Fields was outstanding against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl throwing six TDs, however, he was pretty average against both Indiana and Northwestern. This inconsistency coupled with a lack of experience is why we have him at three. Our view is that he going to the 49ers at pick 3, and if he does he will be able to learn for a year or so behind Jimmy Garoppolo which bodes well for his future. In five years time, he might end up as the most successful from this year’s crop.

Top Half of Round One Prospects

Although the above three should go first it is possible that Jones or Lance could be the favoured pick of either the Jets or 49ers. Whatever with a number of QB needy teams out there is a chance that the Falcons might be made an offer they can’t refuse for their No 4 pick.

4 Mac Jones Alabama Jr 6-3 214

5 Trey Lance N. Dakota St. Soph 6-4 226

Rounds Two – Three Prospects

6 Davis Mills Stanford Sr 6-4 212
