Nick Foles To The Jags – Where Does That Leave The QB Draft Board?

Nick Foles To The Jags – Where Does That Leave The QB Draft Board?

Probably one of the most predictable moves in Free Agency this year was the Jags making a move for Nick Foles, however the headline price $88m with $36m in guarantees was more of a surprise, given that he has only started 14 games in three seasons. However, you look at this though it is money well spent in the current market, with Jacksonville grabbing a Super Bowl winning QB  who a 30 years old arguably still has his best years ahead of him. Obviously this takes them out of the 1st round QB discussions this year, however, they may still take a developmental project later on.

So now there is one less QB needy team and with Washington taking the serviceable Case Keenum from Denver they may not want to splash their 1st round pick. Denver who got good service out of a previous Super Bowl winning QB may be happy this year with Joe Flacco and The NY Giants look set to go with Eli for another season.  Suddenly the chances of three QBs going in round one looks a lot less certain.

The General consensus is that there are three 1st round calibre passers up for grabs this year:

Dwayne Haskins
Kyler Murray
Drew Lock

But who are the candidates for them?

Well if the buzz is to be believed Kyler Murray is already looking for a house near Phoenix so that’s one sorted. But where do the other two go? Well from picks 2-10 only the NY Giants and Denver Broncos stand out as possible landing spots. Both have veteran QB’s in place and although the Giants are coming off a bad season, they are still potentially contenders with Eli. Denver similarly has a decent defence and some pieces in place on offence and they could ride this again as they did with Peyton Manning at the helm.

Between 11-20 only the Bengals & Dolphins look like candidates, and both may decide to stick with their competent if not world-beating signal callers. Washington will be waiting to see how Alex Smith and Colt McCoy recover and of course have Case Keenum who looked franchise calibre in his break out season in Minnesota. Of the three Washington look the most likely to pounce at 15 with Haskins being the pick.

Thereafter the QB market looks bleak with the only possibility being that the LA Chargers or Patriots decide to grab their heir apparent early and sit him for a season or two.

So the most likely outcome from the Foles trade as far as the draft is concerned is that maybe only one or at best two QBs go round 1.
