Weekend of Upsets Leaves Champions League Places Still Up For Grabs

After the Bank Holiday weekends results you couldn’t be blamed for asking “Who Wants a Champions League Place” after a weekend of upsets and losses. It all started on Saturday when Spurs lost narrowly at Champions elect Manchester City. That 1-0 win was enough to put City top but meant that if results went as expected Tottenham could drop to 5th place level on points with Manchester United. However, as it transpired no one was able to take advantage.

On Sunday Liverpool duly took care of business to keep the pressure on Man City, however the Red half of Manchester had a bad day at the office losing 4-0 at Everton to leave them floundering and to many peoples surprise Arsenal couldn’t take advantage either going down 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace. So Spurs stayed a point clear but now Chelsea with a win on Monday against struggling Burnley would move into pole position.

Cue another surprise as Burnley initially took the lead and then equalised after going 2-1 down. All the fun took place in the opening 24 minutes after which Chelsea were left ruing their ineptitude in front of goal. The point was enough to temporarily move them into 4th spot, but Arsenal has a game in hand and Chelsea still have to visit Old Trafford.

So as of now, 3 points separate 3rd & 6th place and Manchester United face both Man City & Chelsea in their next two games. With the easier run in Spurs are odds on to cling onto 3rd place but that final spot may go down to the last game and of course for Spurs, there is the matter of a Champions League Semi-Final against Ajax to think about which could yet end up being their lifeline into Europe.

It’s going to be an exciting run in for the neutral.
