Liverpool Put 5 Past Atalanta

The dominant Liverpool we came to know last season seems to have come back again after a few rocky games, when they beat Italian side Atalanta 5-0 in the Champions League last night.

Liverpool, who won the Champions league the year before last, took on last years quarter finalists Atalanta at home last night, as part of their games in group D.

Atalanta aren’t a bad side – and it’s proven by their league form and the fact they reached the quarter finals last year round, so this defeat is something Liverpool and the players can be particularly proud of – especially newcomer Diogo Jota.

Jota scored alongside Salah and Manè last night, meaning each of the front three got a goal. But, this was a particularly special night for the Portuguese national, as it marked his first Liverpool hat trick.

Jota calmly took all three of his goals, and almost made something out of nothing in every situation he  got – something which Liverpool have been missing from a striker in recent years.

His form has been solid recently, and he has been getting some important goals in the league for Liverpool too.

The big defeat, however, doesn’t mean to say that Atalanta didn’t play well. In fact – they did – they just got very unlucky. Zapata was denied some good chances by Allison and the woodwork – with shots that any other day probably would have creeped in. Muriel got a few good shots off on target too, and Gomez was involved in the game like he usually is.

Liverpool was undoubtedly the better team, and thoroughly deserved to win, but in the end, some very good football from Liverpool, some small mistakes, and some bad luck are ultimately what cost Atalanta the game. They should have had at least 2 goals themselves – but it just obviously wasn’t their day.
