Football is changing each year to try and make it more and more unpredictable, last year there was a massive improvement to the system known as VAR, which changed the way everyone looks at offside goals and more, however, the Premier League has changed another major rule which could change it forever and make it easier for low ranking teams to beat high ranked teams!
The Premier League is one of the hardest leagues in the world to win, known as the best in the world alongside other major leagues. There have been some new rules added to the game to make it more interesting and more eye-catching.
The rule is as follows, there will now be 5 subs rather than 3 in the Premier League, allowing more players to rest during the games and allowing some players to get more game time than they would normally get.
How substitutions have evolved | |
---|---|
Seasons | Subs allowed |
1888-1965 | None |
1965-87 | One |
1987-92 | Two |
1992-94 | Choose two from three |
1994-96 | Three |
1996-2019 | Choose three from five |
2019-20 | Choose three from seven (August to March) |
2019-20 | Choose five from nine (June to July) |
2020-22 | Choose three from seven (from nine from Dec 2020) |
2022-23 | Choose five from nine |

This has happened due to Liverpool having more than 60 fixtures during the season, with international breaks alongside this, this means that some players don’t get as much time to rest as others may get.
This could impact a lot of teams in the Premier League and could result in a different table altogether!
