What Would Happen If Half The Population Vanished? (Avengers Special)

There aren’t any End Game spoiler in this article, but if you still (somehow) haven’t seen Infinity War, there are some pretty big spoilers ahead.

As you know, in the super popular film Infinity War, half of the universe gets wiped out at the hands of the mad titan Thanos, leaving some of the Avengers and citizens of Earth dead. So what would actually happen down here on Earth if something like this did happen?

Well, initially it’d be absolute chaos. There’d be a ton of car and train crashes, and considering there are about 10,000 planes in the air at any time, we can definitely assume that some of the people disappearing are pilots. This would almost certainly result in heavy casualties and the destruction of structures around the world. Very soon after this, there would be major power cuts across the globe, even in places that don’t usually experience such things. This would be as a result of many people working in the power industry disappearing, an industry that requires a certain skill set that not many people have. On top of this, half of your friends and family will have disappeared; making this period of time extremely distressing for survivors.

Civilisation after this point would have to adjust to life without as many people doing important jobs. World leaders, emergency service workers, and even farmers will be among the people that have vanished; these people can’t just simply be replaced. Whether it’s became obvious by now or not, people would simply be less safe. Food and supply shortages would be a real problem for a while, as there will be less people producing the products that we need, and less people transporting them. But after the dust settles and the world starts to adjust to these massive changes, what will life be like?

Why don’t we just ask the citizens of Europe in the 1300’s? Well, when the black plague wiped out 25 million people in Europe, there was only around 25 million left afterwards. Meaning about half of the population died (just as we’re discussing in this scenario). This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Starving people had more food, and considering 36,000,000 people a year die from starvation and hunger, and assuming all the people that would have died now have food, the lives saved from starvation alone would be equal to the 3.5 billion initially wiped out in a mere 100 years or so. On the grand scale of the universe 100 years is nothing! But the benefits don’t stop here. You would more than likely become more financially stable and wealthy (assuming the economy stabilises) as you could charge more for your skills and services… You might be the only surgeon within 20 miles, or the only mechanic in your town! Fewer people with your skills would mean you would be in higher demand. Not only this but less people obviously means less pollution, so the world could start to heal itself from climate change and we could live more comfortably as a species. So after you get over the loss of you loved ones, I think you’d come to like this new world… This is all assuming you survived in the first place…
