Toy Story 4 earned $238 million since it was first shown world wide over the weekend, in particular it performed well in Latin America and Europe. This earning makes it the biggest opening for an animated movie at the worldwide box office ever.
The film is one of three movies Disney has managed to have broken the opening weekend $100 million (£78 million) barrier in 2019. Toy Story 4 comes after 25 years of the first one being released. The film set a UK record opening with £12 million for the three days, this is the highest ever for an animation. Toy Story 4 is yet to open in many places such as France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
It is ranked as the fourth biggest US opening for an animated movie behind Incredibles 2, Finding Dory and Shrek the Third.
However, the film struggled in China and failed to meet expectations in the US.
US journalist Mark Harris suggested the fact the star-studded film failed to match expectations was because “endless brand extensions are starting to bore people”.
Toy Story 4 has become the summer’s latest franchise to open way below expectations. The trade stories have a ton of “Yes, but…” and “Everything’s fine!” Anything to avoid even entertaining the possibility that endless brand extensions are starting to bore people. >
