The Madeleine McCann Netflix Series: A First Impression

If you’ve been on the internet in the last few days, you’ve likely seen or heard about the Madeleine McCann documentary/series that has been released on Netflix.

It was released on the 15th of March, despite the McCann’s not being very happy with its production. In fact, a group of lawyers went through all 8 hours of the series just to try and find something they can sue the production team over. In my opinion, it’s ironic that the family don’t want the series out on Netflix, when they themselves were instructed to not take their story to the media by the police, but did it anyways.

Despite this, the series wasn’t that good (in terms of bringing new evidence to the table). It seems like a quick cash grab, as all the information in the documentary was already available to the public; a half an hour read online would have informed you of everything the 8 hour series did. It was definitely entertaining, and worth a watch if you aren’t clued up on the disappearance, but as someone who has previously researched and formed an opinion on the events, it just feels like 8 hours I’ll never get back.

Which brings me onto my next point. There was literally no opinion in the series, which was disappointing to me. I was wanting to have my opinion challenged, and possibly gain a new understanding on the situation. It was very unbiased and speculative.

In summary, I’d give the series a 6/10, because it was well produced, entertaining and well structured, but it didn’t bring new info to the table.
