Last Christmas: The trailer for the George Michael-inspired film has been released

The first trailer for Last Christmas has been released. It is themed around the songs of George Michael and is scripted by Emma Thompson plus Directed by Paul Feig. The film is set to be released next year and will star Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson.

Director Paul Feig told BBC News: “[George Michael] was putting together his new album when he passed.

“And one of our tracks is one of those songs, and it’s just an absolutely amazing song that I’m so excited the world is going to get to hear now.”

Singer George Michael died on Christmas Day 2016 due to a heart failure. The star was known for his part in the band Wham! which started in the 1980s and was a huge success. He went on to a solo career which also was a huge success.

Last Christmas focuses on a young aspiring singer Kate (Clarke) whose hero/inspiration is George Michael. Emma Thompson started to write the film when Michael was still alive and many of the films parts had his blessing.

Feig clarifies that the film is “not a musical, but George’s music affects the story”.

He added: “There are a couple of sections where where the actors are actually interacting with the music and other sections where George’s music is driving, or underscoring the story. So it’s a nice mix of being neither a jukebox movie nor straight up musical.”

The film is to be released in November this year.
