3rd July - On this Day
What does the 3rd July have to offer, well on this day...
On this day the World Health Organisation (WHO) names the 3rd of July Stay out of the Sun Day. The day is to remind everyone to give their skin a rest from potential sun damage and to raise awareness for the risks of skin cancer.
From today until the 11th of August is known as Dog Days. These dates are generally the hottest days of the year in Northern Hemisphere. Usually about 40 days, but variously reckoned at 30–54 days. Popularly believed to be an evil time "when the sea boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics and frenzies" (from Brady's Clavis Calendarium, 1813). Originally the days when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before or at about the same time as sunrise (no longer true owing to precession of the equinoxes). Ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.
Finally, today marks a day to love yourself, named Compliment Your Mirror Day, compliment your mirror on having such a wonderful owner and keeping track of whether other mirrors you meet during the day smile at you.
