Spain had been dealing with a rebellion by Protestants in the Netherlands, when England sent funds to the rebels and allowed the rebel ships to stay in English ports. This was because England relied on the cloth trade in the Netherlands but also to go against Catholic Spain. In 1585 England also agreed to send 7,000 troops under Dudley’s command to support the rebellion.

The Spanish had been involved in many plots against Elizabeth including the Throckmorton plot. The Spanish wanted to bring Elizabeth down

Exploration

English and Spanish sailors have been competing to conquer the new world.  This led English attacking the Spanish stealing a lot of gold.
