Mametz Wood context

Mametz Wood is in northern France, where, in the first battle of the Somme in July 1916, the 36th (welsh) division were commanded to attack German soldiers concealed in the wood. It was at the cost of 4000 killed or injured. Owen Sheers, a welsh poet, visited the site of this battle almost 100 years later, and this poem describes his experiences and thoughts. This poem is a memorial to the bravery of the soldiers
