A man pulled his son away from a live grenade at the last second as he stopped him picking it up.

The grenade was found on a popular canal walk route and was initially mistaken for a turtle in the ground, the pair said.

The grenade.

However, Louie Lomas, 29, soon realised it wasn’t a turtle, but a grenade, and stopped his son picking it up from the ground just as Lockley, 5, was reaching for it.

Louis said: “It was right by our feet. I thought, ‘What’s a turtle doing in the ground?’ But it was pretty obvious what it was.

“Lockley did try to pick it up and I had to grab him very quickly.”

After realising what the object actually was, the 29 year old said he called the police to come and possibly remove it from the ground.

“They jumped us into the car and sped to the end of the road,” he said.

“Luckily we were in the middle of nowhere with no houses within 100 meters.

“I was disappointed I didn’t get to see it explode.

“The look on Lockley’s mum’s face when we got back,” Louie continued, “it freaked her right out.”

After the police and bomb squad arrived, they safely detonated the grenade.
