He held a meeting with Dominic Raab where he expressed his concerns to him, whilst still recovering from his short stay at hospital due to the Coronavirus. It’s too early to lift restrictions he’s said, as a second lockdown may be needed if this happens which will damage health and economy even more.

“The idea that we will be rushing to lift measures is a non-starter,” a government source said. “If the transmission rate rises significantly we will have to do a harder lockdown again.”

The health secretary Mark Hancock agrees with the continued restrictions, and believes we should try and suppress the virus more than we already have.

“It’s a question of how comfortable you are with the virus circulating in the community,” a source said. “Everyone wants the rate of transmission to be below 1 [when one person infects, on average, less than one other person]. But the question is how much lower it should be.”

As you may know, the restrictions put in place 3 weeks ago have been extended for another 3 weeks, meaning that the earliest we will see any sort of restrictions lifted is around May 7th.

In regards to the death toll, the coronavirus death toll in Britain went from 15,564 to 16,060; a 596 rise, the lowest for around a fortnight.
