One of the highest paid transfers, for defenders, in the history of football, Van Dijk has made a massive impact into Liverpool’s team and could be on his way to win loads more trophies with the club if they continue their form from last season. Liverpool were unlucky to not win the Premier League last year however this year could be there year and the Liverpool defender could be getting a Ballon d’Or this year if he continues to perform! Even if he doesn’t, he could still win after his incredible season at Anfield and how well he performed all year for them!
The Dutchman is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year and could win it due to him winning the PFA player of the year and the Champions League with Liverpool, so he could be the first defender since 2006 to win the Ballon d’Or and the second year in a row that Messi or Ronaldo haven’t won it! He is likely to be crowd Ballon d’Or winner right now, but will he win it? Many fans think so! “If I am rewarded for the season, I had that would be unbelievable and I would be so proud.” said Van Dijk.
The Ballon d’Or is normally won by either midfielders or forwards, as proven since 2006. Ronaldo and Messi are always in the top 10 for the Ballon d’Or and this year was no different, other than Modric winning the award and becoming the best footballer in the world currently. Ronaldo was second, Griezmann was third and Mbappe was fourth, a 20-year-old talent almost won the Ballon d’Or! The reason this may change this year, is because Van Dijk was 100% the best player in the European Championships and the best player in the premier league by far and could win it!
