On this day in 2009 The most valuable treasure ever discovered in the United Kingdom, the Staffordshire Hoard, was found by metal-detector hobbyist Terry Herbert near Lichfield, England. The Anglo-Saxon hoard, probably warriors' loot, dates to the seventh century and includes 1,500 pieces of gold and silver sword hilts, shield bosses, helmets, crosses and more.
