The 77th Annual Golden Globes Awards are now a matter of record and by and large few will argue too much with the winners and by an large it went off without a hitch. The night included a number of inebriated speeches and a fair few references to climate change – however, given this is the new norm no eyebrows were raised.
Joaquim Phoenix (who thankfully looks to have put some weight on after looking positively ill in his role as the Joker) deserved the award for the nights most memorable speech, which included a fair few profanities, numerous climate change references including a somewhat heartfelt request for celebrities to refrain from using their private jets – as much!
This is in stark comparison to Russell Crowe who refrained from joining the awards as he had more important things to do – fighting bush fires in his native Australia. Kudos to him – although we wouldn’t have expected anything less from a Gladiator (and a Leeds United fan).
Thanks to the @goldenglobes .
What a cast I got to work with.
Naomi Watts, @WallisAnnabelle Sienna Miller, Aleksa Palladino @JoshStamberg @SethMacFarlane Simon McBurney and everybody else. They created a complete world. Their commitment, sensitivity and courage was inspiring. pic.twitter.com/AW9PtKwKF3— Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) 6 January 2020
While we are on the subject of Stark – Game of Thrones was noticeably absent from the roll of honour, not a huge surprise given the reception season eight got, however, the excellent Kit Harington at least got a nomination in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama category.
Not surprisingly Quinten Tarrantino added to his tally with the Best Picture Award (Comedy) with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which surprisingly is only his 9th movie. Is it his best – well that will divide opinions, but it is a masterpiece of cinematography in its own way and the cast is great.
As for the unluckiest well spare a thought for the team responsible for the Marvelous Mrs Maisel and the leading actress Rachel Brosnahan who despite being fantastic ran up against the proverbial immovable object (and of course much more widely publicised) Fleabag. Still, Rachel did get the award in 2018 & 2019 so as they say it’s nice to share.
