On this day in 1995, Amazon.com was first incorporated as an online bookstore by founder Jeff Bezos at Seattle.

Also, on this day in 1990, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck the Philippines, killing an estimated 1,621 persons and leaving approximately 1,000 missing. The quake struck in an area north of Manila, and heavy damage was reported at Cabanatuan, at Baguio and on Luzon island. The quake was the worst in the Philippines in 14 years.
