The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand went to visit Sarajevo on the 28th June 1914. This was the day that there was a national festival day for Serbs, so feelings against the list from Franz Ferdinand were very high. In Spite of this the security was poor. There was only 120 police to cover a journey of 6km and they’re so excited they watched the parade rather than the crowd. One assassins, Cabrinovic, threw a hand grenade as the Archduke’s car, which which deflected off the Archduke’s car and fell into road, wounding around 20 people.

The decision was made to continue the parade. Arrangements were made for a detour so the Archduke could visit the wounded in hospital. The driver topple a wrong turn and Franz Ferinand’s car came to a halt in front of another member of the Black Hand, Gavrilo Princip, who was just coming out of a sandwich shop. Princip took out his gun and fired two shots, killing both Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.

The assassins were put on trial and two of them were executed. Princip was only 19 too young for the death penalty, so he was imprisoned for 20 years. He then died in prison in 1918.
