Fintastic Friday – Help Save Sharks

Fintastic Friday – Help Save Sharks

Fintastic Friday is celebrated annually on the second Friday in May and is organised by WhaleTimes Inc.

The aim of today is to raise awareness of the plight of the oceans apex predator, particularly among children who may know little about them or have a view based on movie sensation i.e Jaws.

Anyway, why not visit their site and spend a few minutes thinking about the crazy number of sharks which are killed every year – somewhere between 100-200 Million that’s 100,000,000 – 200,000,000 in number form (a lot of zeros) or between 3 & 6 every second!

While you are here – Three things to think about:

Several Species of Shark may have become extinct in the last few years.

There are around 400 main species but only around a dozen of these have been involved in attacks on Humans – Most attacks are by Great White’s (Carcharodon carcharias), Tiger Sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier), and Bull Sharks (Carcharhinus leucas). There are a few human fatalities every year but figures from the US show that you are twice as likely to die from being hit by lightning than being involved in a shark attack.

A significant number of Sharks are killed every year just for their Dorsal Fins which is used in Soup. The poor creatures are often cast back into the sea finless to endure an agonising death.

So enjoy Fintastic Friday people and if anyone offers you Shark Fin Soup – Just say NO.
